[Saba Sports News] While playing for Bengal in a Ranji Trophy game, Akash Deep received unexpected news: his inclusion in India’s Test squad for the remaining three matches against England, replacing Avesh Khan. This announcement caught him by surprise, as he had hoped for a Test call-up in the future but didn’t anticipate it so soon. “I was hopeful for a call-up if I continued performing, but I didn’t expect it by the third match,” Akash shared.
Akash’s selection was a nod to his impressive record in domestic cricket, where he has claimed 103 wickets in 29 matches since debuting in 2019. His recent performance, taking 11 wickets in two unofficial Tests against the England Lions, showcased his readiness for international cricket.
Beyond his domestic success, Akash Deep’s experience with the ODI squad in South Africa offered him invaluable insights into the demands of international play, particularly the mental strength required.
From a challenging start in Bihar, where cricket aspirations were often discouraged, Akash’s journey to international cricket was fraught with personal and financial hardships. The loss of his father and brother within six months was a pivotal moment, motivating him to support his family through cricket. Playing leather-ball cricket for his club and earning through tennis-ball matches, Akash managed to support his family’s expenses.
Now set to join the Indian Test squad, Akash looks forward to sharing the dressing room with Mukesh Kumar, a fellow Bengal pacer. His call-up to the national team is not just a personal achievement but a tribute to Bengal, the state that has been instrumental in his cricketing journey. “This national call-up is my way of showing gratitude to Bengal,” Akash expressed, proud of the path he and Mukesh are paving for their state on the international stage.
