[Saba Sports News] James Harden executed an unprecedented move during the game against the Blazers, and it wasn’t for the better.
In a matchup between the Clippers and the Portland Trail Blazers, with the Clippers holding a commanding 81-60 lead in the third quarter, Harden surprised everyone by defending his own teammate, Kawhi Leonard, during a crucial play. Harden’s unexpected defensive maneuver left Leonard unable to take a clean shot, as seen in the clip below.
When questioned about this unusual tactic after the Clippers’ 116-103 victory, Harden explained that he aimed to inject some energy into his team during a challenging period of play. While his intention may have been to lighten the mood, the move was met with confusion, even annoyance, from Leonard and Clippers head coach Ty Lue.
“I’m trying to bring some excitement to this team, you know what I mean? I think this last few weeks has been a fog for us. I think every team goes through it,” Harden said. “So, I think it’s just me trying to create a great energy and create a great vibe for this team. It would have been better if he made the shot, but give somebody something to laugh about, you know what I mean? Some excitement.”
While Harden has made his fair share of mistakes in the past, this move seemed intentional. Whether it was an attempt to gain attention or simply a moment of spontaneity, it’s unlikely we’ll witness a repeat performance from Harden this season.
