[Saba Sports News] The 2024 F1 Australian Grand Prix was filled with
unexpected events. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen, who started from
pole position, was forced to retire on the fifth lap due to a right rear brake
failure. This marks his first retirement since the 2022 Australian Grand Prix.
His impressive streak of nine consecutive Grand Prix wins came to an end, as
well as his record of scoring points in 43 consecutive races. Unfortunately, he
fell short of challenging Lewis Hamilton’s incredible record of 48 consecutive
games with points. Based on live footage, Verstappen’s car was overtaken by
Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz on the third lap. Verstappen, with his keen senses,
immediately inquired through the team radio if there were any issues with his
car. As anticipated, on the fifth lap, Verstappen’s brake pads exploded,
resulting in smoke. Data reveals that Australia’s Albert Park circuit underwent
revisions in 2022, transforming it from a medium and low-speed circuit into a
high-speed track with an average single-lap speed exceeding 230kph. Combined
with the introduction of the C5 super-soft tires this year, the braking demands
on the car have become extremely high. Even a slight adjustment error can lead
to brake fires like the one experienced by Verstappen.
