Collins Obuya, an
all-rounder for Kenya, has announced his retirement from cricket after his team
lost to Uganda on Saturday in the African Games’ third-place play-off.
Obuya, a leg-stamping all-rounder, made 2044 runs and claimed 35 wickets in 104
One-Day Internationals for Kenya. Kenya lost their ODI status in 2014, and he
is now their third-highest run scorer in the format.
With 1794 runs from 76 outings, he also holds the record for most runs scored
by Kenya in T20Is.
“I have decided to retire from the game after 23 years. It’s been a big
honour playing for Kenya,” Obuya said after the match.
Kenya made it to the
World Cup semifinals in 2003 thanks in large part to Obuya. His career-best
performance of 5 for 24 enabled Kenya to defeat Sri Lanka and advance to the
Super Six round. He collected wickets in the match, including Aravinda de
Silva, Mahela Jayawardene, and Kumar Sangakkara, helping Kenya to a victorious
210-run victory. At 28.76, he finished the competition with 13 wickets.
Obuya delivered his finest batting performance of the 2011 World Cup, going
undefeated in his 98-run victory over Australia to win player-of-the-match.
Following the 2011 World Cup, Obuya was named Kenya’s captain; however, he
resigned from the position in 2013 when his country was not able to advance to
the 2014 T20 World Cup.
