With only seven rounds remaining in the Bundesliga, Frankfurt find
themselves in sixth place with 41 points, trailing RB Leipzig by nine points in
the race for European qualification. Unfortunately, their chances of securing a
spot in European competition for the next season appear slim. Frankfurt have
been performing somewhat mediocrely, having collected only eight points in the
past five league matches. One of the reasons behind their struggles is their
poor defensive ability during set-piece situations. They have had difficulty
defending against opponents’ headers and set-piece attacks. In the last five
games, Frankfurt have conceded seven goals, with four of them coming from
set-piece situations. From a tactical perspective, Frankfurt typically deploy a
3-4-1-2 formation. Their offensive trident consists of two center forwards and
a shadow forward. This configuration is quite popular in the Bundesliga.
Egyptian center forward Omar Marmoush serves as the focal point of Frankfurt’s
offense, having scored 10 goals and provided six assists so far. The candidate
for the shadow forward position behind him is Ansgar Knauff, who has scored
seven goals and contributed one assist. Unfortunately, Malmouche’s performance
has been impacted by his observance of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which
has altered his eating habits and affected his competitive state. Since March,
Malmouche has been unable to find the back of the net.
Werder Bremen currently enjoy a comfortable 10-point cushion above the
relegation zone, which means there is relatively little pressure to avoid
relegation. As a result, they have been focusing on providing training
opportunities for young players in their recent lineups. Players such as
21-year-old midfielder Skelly Alvero, 22-year-old forward Nick Woltemade, and
22-year-old defender Julian Malatini have been starting regularly. From a
tactical standpoint, Bremen’s tactics revolve around their fulcrum player
Marvin Ducksch, who has contributed nine goals and five assists thus far.
Defensively, they primarily employ a low-post defensive strategy. If the
situation on the field becomes difficult to break through, Bremen will activate
Plan B, which involves the 1.98-meter tall forward Nick Woltemade dropping back
outside the penalty area. He utilizes his height advantage and ability to
receive balls behind him, creating opportunities for teammates in the backline
to take long-range shots in open spaces. Additionally, Bremen possess a threat
from set pieces. In their recent away match against Union Berlin, for instance,
they scored through set-piece tactics. In the upcoming encounter, Bremen are
expected to prioritize their defensive efforts. They will then rely on Plan B
and set-piece tactics to pose threats to their opponents.
Considering the reputation and player value, Frankfurt may have an
advantage over Werder Bremen. However, taking into account the issues with the
sluggishness of their offensive core, Malmouche, and their defensive
shortcomings, it is expected to be challenging for Frankfurt to exploit Bremen’s
weaknesses. Taking everything into consideration, it is believed that Werder
Bremen have a good chance of earning points from the away game.
