[Saba Sports News] In what is a massive development, India batter Shreyas Iyer has come back as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain and will lead the team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
Iyer missed the previous IPL season due to a back injury and KKR had to name a stand-in captain.
Nitish Rana, who was the skipped of the KKR in IPL 2023, has been announced as Iyer’s deputy now.
KKR acquired Iyer’s services for INR 12.25 crore ahead of IPL 2022. In his first season as the franchise’s captain, he failed to live up to the expectations as the side finished seventh on the points table.
In the following edition of the tournament, where Rana led the team, KKR again ended at the seventh place.
Praising Rana, Iyer said, “I believe the last season presented us with several challenges, including my absence due to injury. Nitish did a great job not only filling in for me but also with his commendable leadership. I am delighted that KKR has named him Vice Captain. No doubt it will strengthen the leadership group.”
KKR released 12 players from their squad leading up to the IPL 2024 auction, scheduled in Dubai on December 19. They have a purse of INR 32.7 crore.
