[Saba Sports News] Former Ferrari driver Felipe Massa is initiating
legal action to challenge the results of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. Massa
argues that the FIA failed to take appropriate action when it first became
aware of the Crashgate plot. During the race, Nelson Angelo Piquet Jr., who was
driving for the Renault team at the time, deliberately crashed, leading to the
deployment of the safety car and ultimately helping teammate Fernando Alonso
secure the victory. As a result, Massa failed to score any points in the
Singapore Grand Prix, while Lewis Hamilton finished third. The outcome of this
race had significant implications for Ferrari and Massa. In the final standings
of that year, Massa lost the championship to Hamilton by just one point. Jean
Todt, the former FIA president and Ferrari team principal, strongly supports
Massa’s legal action. Although Massa acknowledges the slim chances of
overturning the case, he is determined to restart the investigation. He has
also stated that he is not seeking financial compensation. In the editor’s
opinion, Formula 1 is filled with regrets, and the outcome of championships can
hinge on various factors. For instance, the editor mentions that without the
safety car in Abu Dhabi in 2021, Hamilton would have secured his eighth
championship.
