It’s designed to break records. Indeed. However, some
seem indestructible. similar to the 100 international centuries of Sachin
Tendulkar. Eight hundred Test wickets for Mutthaiah Muralitharan. Brian Lara’s
400 on the test was his best score. The highest ODI score of 264 for Rohit
Sharma. But Lara thinks that record might be surpassed. In a time when 400+
team scores in a Test innings are starting to become rare, Lara identified the
batsman who has the best chance of surpassing his world record individual score
in addition to saying that it is possible.
The legendary player from the West Indies claimed that
gifted Indian batsman Shubman Gill has the potential to score over 400 runs in
a Test match. In a Test match against England in 2004, Lara became the first
and, to date, the only cricket player to reach the 400 mark. In first-class
cricket, he also has the record for the highest individual score. Back in 1994,
the left-hander had scored an undefeated 501 for Warwickshire against Durham in
a County Championship encounter.
Lara said Gill could break both of his towering feats.
“Shubman Gill can break both my records,” Lara told Anandabazar
Patrika. The former West Indies captain referred Gill as the most talented
batter of the current lot. “Gill is the most talented batter in this new
generation. He will rule cricket in the coming years. I believe he will go on
to break many big records,” he added.
Gill hasn’t had the best start to his Test career
despite being the youngest Indian to achieve a century in all game types and
the youngest person to score a double hundred in an ODI. With just one century
to his credit, he has amassed 966 runs at an average of 32 in 18 games. But
he’s only 24 years old and has his best years yet to come.
“Gill didn’t score a century (in the World Cup)
but look a the knocks he has already played. He has centuries in all formats,
has smashed a double hundred in ODIs and has also played many match-winnings in
the IPL. I’m sure he will many ICC tournaments in the future,” he added.
