[Saba Sports News] Shreyas Iyer is keen to bowl for India but has been held back due to a back injury. Despite his willingness, repeated injuries have led the team’s strength and conditioning coaches to limit his bowling to focus on his recovery. In his international career, Iyer has only bowled 45 balls, conceding 43 runs without taking a wicket, although he has claimed 10 wickets in domestic matches.
After India’s recent win over Australia, Iyer expressed a strong desire to showcase his bowling skills.
“I have been longing to bowl, but the strength and conditioning coaches, they are right ‘now you are not going to bowl for some time’. That’s the sad part of it,” Shreyas shared.
Following his impressive performance in the final T20I against Australia in Bengaluru on December 3, where he scored 53 runs in 37 balls, Iyer is preparing for the upcoming series against South Africa. He played a key role at number three, helping India reach 160/8. In the series, he totaled 65 runs with an average of 21.67 and also excelled in fielding, taking crucial catches.
Iyer shared his mindset during the match, adjusting his approach after early wickets fell. He believes the team’s total was adequate and praised the overall team effort.
“My mindset was to go boom boom, but when I saw three wickets falling, my mind started calculating. It wasn’t an easy wicket to bat on. I feel 160 was the right total, which we got eventually. To defend it was a brilliant performance from the team.” I’m elated to be honest to see everyone chipping in and contributing for the team,” Iyer revealed.
Looking ahead, Iyer is part of the Indian squad for the upcoming series in South Africa, which includes three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests. He is one of the three players selected for all formats, alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar.
