[Saba Sports News] The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a significant announcement on Wednesday, confirming the extension of Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the team.
Originally appointed in November 2021, Dravid’s initial two-year term concluded after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. However, in a surprising turn of events, BCCI successfully persuaded Dravid to continue in his role for an indefinite period.
Contrary to earlier speculations that Dravid might step down post the World Cup after India lost in the final to Australia, BCCI’s efforts to convince him to stay proved fruitful. The continuity of the support staff, including batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach T Dilip was also confirmed.
Additionally, VVS Laxman will persist as the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), possibly taking on coaching responsibilities for less competitive tours in Dravid’s absence.
BCCI President Roger Binny, commended Dravid’s vision, professionalism and contributions to Team India’s success. He expressed confidence in Dravid’s leadership and highlighted the mutual respect and shared vision between the head honcho and the BCCI.
“Mr. Rahul Dravid’s vision, professionalism, and unyielding efforts have been important pillars in Team India’s success. As Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team, you are always under immense scrutiny and I extend appreciation to him not only for embracing the challenges but for thriving in them. The performances of the Indian Team are a testament to his strategic guidance. I am delighted that he accepted the offer to remain the Head Coach, and it speaks of the mutual respect and shared vision between him and the BCCI. I have no doubt that under him, the team will continue its march to the pinnacle of success and set new benchmarks along the way,” Binny said as quoted in the press release issued by the BCCI.
Dravid, reflecting on his extension, expressed pride in the team’s culture, emphasizing resilience in moments of triumph or adversity. He acknowledged the phenomenal skills and talent within the squad and stressed the importance of the right process and preparation in achieving consistent success.
“The last two years with Team India have been thoroughly memorable. Together, we have witnessed the highs and lows, and throughout this journey, the support and camaraderie within the group have been phenomenal,” stated Dravid.
“I am genuinely proud of the culture we have set in the dressing room. It’s a culture that stands resilient, whether in moments of triumph or adversity. The skills and talent that our team possesses are phenomenal, and what we’ve stressed is following the right process and sticking to our preparations, which has had a direct impact on the overall result,” he added.
Dravid’s second coaching stint will kick off with India’s tour to South Africa, featuring three T20Is starting from December 10, followed by three ODIs and two Tests commencing on December 17 and December 26 respectively.
