[Saba Sports News] Steve Smith is set to play for the Sydney Sixers in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, aiming to build on his remarkable performance from the last season and eyeing the 2024 T20 World Cup. After missing two seasons, Smith made a strong comeback last year, scoring 346 runs in just five innings, which included back-to-back centuries. His successful transition to opening the innings has continued in the ongoing T20I series against India.
Smith expressed his excitement about rejoining the Sixers, a team he’s been with since the first BBL edition, noting his fond memories and eagerness to play again. His first match for the Sixers this season will be against the Melbourne Renegades at the Sydney Cricket Ground on December 8, where he’ll face Australian teammates Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon.
“It’s great to be back in the Sixers shirt. I’ve got some really fond memories, playing for the Sixers. Obviously, I am an original, part of the first squad, and really enjoyed my time playing last year for the five or six games and the finals that I played, so I’m keen to get out there again,” Smith shared.
Moises Henriques, the Sixers’ captain, praised Smith’s skills and his importance to the team, both on and off the field. He highlighted Smith’s entertainment value and his role in enhancing the team’s dynamics.
Following the opening game, Smith will join Australia’s Test series against Pakistan before returning to the BBL for the Sydney derby on January 12. The BBL 13 season kicks off with Brisbane Heat hosting Melbourne Stars at the Gabba on December 7.
