[Saba Sports News] Experienced Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami’s mother, Anjum Ara, was hospitalized prior to the thrilling ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final between India and Australia at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19, where Australia secured their sixth championship. Due to severe health issues and sudden dizziness on Sunday morning, Ara couldn’t make it to the eagerly awaited game. Only Shami’s elder brother,
Haseeb, and his family attended, while the rest of the family had initially planned to be there.
News 18, having recently spoken with Ara, highlighted her continuous health battles. She was hospitalized following a routine check-up on the same day. In the meantime, Mohammed Kaif, Shami’s younger brother and a former Indian domestic cricketer, was not informed about Ara’s condition.
In the ODI World Cup 2023, Mohammed Shami delivered a memorable performance. Absent for India’s first four matches, the 33-year-old made a significant impact upon his return. In India’s fifth game against New Zealand at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, he claimed five wickets and was named Player of the Match. His impressive form continued with a standout performance against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where he achieved figures of 5/18, contributing to a 302-run victory and earning another Player of the Match title.
Shami’s remarkable effort in the semifinal against New Zealand in Mumbai was another highlight. India, batting first, posted 397 runs, and Shami achieved a career-best 7/57, securing his third Player of the Match award in the tournament. He concluded the World Cup as the top wicket-taker, claiming 24 wickets in seven games.
