[Saba Sports News] Cricket faces rampant corruption, baffling administrators with ongoing incidents. However, a potential approach by a former Kenya international to a Ugandan player at the T20 World Cup 2024 was swiftly addressed.
Reports indicate that during the group stage, a former Kenyan player contacted a Ugandan cricketer using various phone numbers. Following ICC anti-corruption protocols, the Ugandan player promptly reported the incident to ACU officials, leading to warnings issued to associate nations.
“It’s not surprising this person targeted a Ugandan player. Associate nations are softer targets for corruption compared to major teams, but the player did the right thing by informing the ICC promptly,” a source told IndiaToday. Failing to report a corrupt approach is an offence under the ICC’s anti-corruption code, alongside match-fixing, betting, misuse of inside information, and non-cooperation with investigations.
“Players, especially from smaller nations, are frequently approached. During major events like the T20 World Cup, there’s increased scrutiny, and any approach reported to the ICC ACU is thoroughly investigated,” another source noted.
International players are regularly briefed on potential threats and educated on the ICC’s anti-corruption code. Recently, the ICC strengthened its anti-corruption laws to better investigate and address corruption, protecting the integrity of the game.
