[Saba Sports News] South Africa’s David Miller received an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during a Super Eights Group 2 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against England at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia on June 21.
Miller was found guilty of breaching Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match.” One demerit point was added to his record, marking his first offense in 24 months.
The incident occurred in the 19th over of South Africa’s innings when Miller, expecting a “no ball” call for height on a full toss from Sam Curran, showed dissent by signaling for a review, which is not allowed for such decisions in the World Cup.
Despite this, Miller scored 43 off 28 balls, complementing Quinton de Kock’s 65 off 38, on a challenging surface. South Africa defended their total of 163, winning by seven runs and extending their tournament winning streak to six games. Miller admitted the offense and accepted the sanction, proposed by ICC Match Referee Jeff Crowe, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Chris Brown and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Joel Wilson, and fourth umpire Chris Gaffaney.
Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
