[Saba Sports News] Shubman Gill is set to lead India for the first time in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe in Harare. This series marks India’s first T20I assignment following their T20 World Cup 2024 triumph and the first since the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Ahead of the first T20I on Saturday, July 6, Gill spoke about the pressure of continuing the legacy of Rohit and Virat. The Punjab batter acknowledged the difficulty of matching their achievements.
“Pressure and expectations are always there. But trying to reach what Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have achieved adds more pressure. Every player has individual goals, so there’s already pressure. If you aim to reach where someone else has, it increases the pressure,” Gill said in the pre-match press conference. He added that Kohli and Rohit are his idols and legends of Indian cricket.
Gill has yet to establish himself in T20I cricket, scoring 335 runs in 14 matches at an average of 25.77 and a strike rate of 147.58, including one century and one half-century.
He has scored 133 runs in his last eight innings at an average of 16.62 and a strike rate of 126.66. With the retirements of Rohit and Kohli, Gill is expected to lead India’s batting and hopes to deliver a stellar performance against Zimbabwe to boost his confidence.
