[Saba Sports News] Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie is set to take charge of the Pakistan men’s Test team. In their last series, led by Shan Masood, Pakistan struggled Down Under, losing 3-0 to Australia. Since then, Mohammad Hafeez has exited the team, and Babar Azam has expressed interest in taking over Test leadership.
Pakistan cricket is currently facing significant challenges, including an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 and criticism from Hafeez about players’ lack of focus during Test matches. A series loss against Bangladesh could further hurt the team. Gillespie is aware of these issues and is committed to improving the team’s performance.
Gillespie emphasized his focus on helping Pakistan succeed in the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh, starting August 21. He believes that with the right strategy and preparation, Pakistan can achieve positive results.
“Against Bangladesh, my focus will be on how Pakistan can play well. I’m not dwelling on my last Test match,” Gillespie told The Daily Star, referencing his unbeaten double hundred against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2006.
“While those are nice memories, my energy is on Pakistan and how we can impact Bangladesh, who are a very good team. We need to prepare well, do our research, and identify strategies to succeed. It will be my first Test match in charge, and I’m really looking forward to it,” he added. Pakistan has yet to confirm whether Shan Masood will continue as Test captain or be replaced.
