[Saba Sports News] As the world prepares to bid farewell to one of its greatest fast bowlers, James Anderson is set to play his final Test match for England against the West Indies at Lord’s on Wednesday, July 10.
The opening day was marked by a special moment as Anderson’s family rang the ceremonial bell, signaling the start of play. The bell, located outside the Bowlers’ Bar of the Lord’s Pavilion, is a cherished tradition in Test cricket.
Anderson’s retirement marks the end of an era in English cricket. Debuting internationally in 2002, he has seen the sport evolve from the dominance of Test cricket to the rise of T20 leagues. As he prepares for his 188th Test, Anderson has an astounding 700 Test wickets. He needs just 13 more to become the first fast bowler and third cricketer overall to reach 1000 international wickets. Nine wickets in his farewell Test would also surpass Shane Warne’s tally of 708, making Anderson the second-highest wicket-taker in Test history.
The day began with Anderson leading out the England team one last time. The hosts won the toss and elected to field first, giving Anderson an immediate chance to add to his wicket tally. The match also saw wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith and bowler Gus Atkinson receive their Test caps. At the toss, England captain Ben Stokes paid tribute to Anderson’s professionalism and passion.
“What we can expect from Jimmy is complete heart, desire, and passion to go out there and win games for England… Jimmy is the ultimate professional,” Stokes said.
