[Saba Sports News] Glenn Maxwell last played Test cricket for Australia in 2017, and since then, he’s been limited to white-ball matches. Cricket Australia recently announced the squad for the white-ball tour to the UK, including series against England and Scotland. With the important Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India in December-January and a red-ball tour to Sri Lanka in 2025, Maxwell might return to Test cricket.
The two-match Test series in Sri Lanka will be part of Australia’s World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Maxwell could be included in the playing XI due to Australia’s aggressive approach in the subcontinent.
Last time, Australia toured Asia for six months, losing to India 0-1, winning against Pakistan 1-0, and drawing 1-1 with Sri Lanka. Selection chair George Bailey emphasized prioritizing every Test and adapting the team for different conditions.
Maxwell has had a streak of bad luck with Test appearances. He was called up for the Sri Lanka tour in 2022 but didn’t play, and a leg injury prevented his participation in the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India. He expressed his desire to play in the 2025 Sri Lanka tour back in November 2023.
“Being on the Sri Lanka tour last year shows they still consider me an option for red-ball cricket,” Maxwell said in November 2023.
