After being fired as England’s head coach, Chris Silverwood was hired for the first time in English cricket. He will now work as an assistant to Tom Moody at the Oval Invincibles, the defending Hundred champions, replacing Azhar Mahmood.
Following England’s 4-0 loss to Australia in early 2022, Silverwood lost his job, but he was only unemployed for two months as he signed a two-year contract to join Sri Lanka. That was later expanded to include the recent T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean, but Silverwood left soon after they were eliminated in the group stage, claiming a dislike of being away from home for extended periods of time.
He will now become a member of Moody’s staff at the Invincibles for 2024, ahead of Tuesday’s opening matchday for both the Hundred and the Invincibles versus Birmingham Phoenix. After taking a full-time position with Pakistan earlier this year, Mahmood resigned from his position, and Silverwood will now be a part of the men’s coaching team alongside Jim Troughton and Matt Walker.
This summer, James Foster, the former coach of the Northern Superchargers, who was fired after the team earned the wooden spoon in the men’s division, will also be back at the Hundred. At London Spirit, he has taken Paul Collingwood’s role as one of Trevor Bayliss’s assistants. Collingwood was away from the tournament from the outset due to England Test duty.
The Australian Ashley Noffke, who leads the Spirit’s women’s squad, has hired two more assistant coaches to her staff. Both Marc Broom of Sunrisers and Ali Maiden, the assistant coach for the Yorkshire men, have been appointed. Maiden may be a candidate to succeed Noffke when he retires at the end of this season.
This year’s most noteworthy coaching hire in the Hundred was Andrew Flintoff, who took Foster’s position as the men’s head coach of the Superchargers. This Friday night at Headingley, he will coach his first game as head coach against the Trent Rockets.
