[Saba Sports News] Shubman Gill is optimistic that India will thrive under the new coaching setup led by Gautam Gambhir. The Men in Blue are gearing up for a white-ball tour against Sri Lanka, featuring three T20Is and three ODIs, starting Saturday, July 27, with the first T20I in Pallekele.
Gill, named vice-captain for both formats on this tour, will work with Gambhir, who is taking charge as head coach for the first time following Rahul Dravid’s departure after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory. The Indian team has been training intensively in Sri Lanka under Gambhir’s guidance. Gill praised Gambhir for his clear communication and intent during practice sessions.
“We are world champions and aim to continue playing at that level. Hopefully, we’ll achieve more success under the new coaching staff. This is my first time working with him (Gambhir),” Gill said during a press conference in Pallekele.
“In the net sessions, his intent and communication have been very clear. He knows exactly which player to focus on and what areas to work on,” he added.
The 24-year-old mentioned that his goals as a batter remain unchanged despite his new role as vice-captain, although he will have to make more decisions on the field.
“Vice-captaincy doesn’t change much. I still need to perform and win matches for the team,” Gill said. “But on the field, I need to make more decisions, and that’s the only difference,” he added.
Gill recently led an inexperienced Indian team to a 4-1 series win in Zimbabwe, finishing as the leading run-getter. He aims to build on his performances during the Sri Lanka tour.
