[Saba Sports News] Rohit Sharma is back as India captain for the ODI series against Sri Lanka after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 on June 29. In the first ODI at R. Premadasa Stadium, Rohit displayed his casual best when Washington Sundar appealed for an LBW, and the umpire showed no interest.
Initially hesitant to go for the review, Rohit reprimanded Sundar for not being fully sure of the dismissal.
On the fourth ball of the 29th over, Sundar bowled a near-perfect yorker to Dunith Wellalage, who missed the ball completely as it hit his pads with a slight deflection.
The bowler and wicket-keeper were interested, and Sundar started convincing Rohit for a review but hesitated.
Rohit, maintaining a calm demeanor, vented his frustration, saying, “You tell me, mereko kya dekh raha he, sab kuch mai hi karu” (You tell me, why’re you gazing at me, should I do everything?).
Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, but the decision proved disastrous as they were reduced to 101 for five in 27 overs. Indian bowlers continued the assault, restricting the Lankan Lions to 230 for eight in 50 overs. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel took two wickets each, while other bowlers contributed with one each.
Sri Lanka was on the verge of another batting collapse, similar to the third T20I. Opener Pathum Nissanka scored a gritty 56 off 75 balls, holding one end as wickets fell at the other. Dunith Wellalage played an uncharacteristic innings of an unbeaten 67 off 65 balls to take his team to a respectable score.
