Jacob Oram, a respected figure in New Zealand cricket, has been officially appointed as the bowling coach for the New Zealand men’s team. The announcement, made on August 29, 2024, comes as the Blackcaps prepare for a crucial Test series against India in October, marking the start of Oram’s tenure.
Oram, who played 33 Tests, 160 ODIs, and 36 T20Is for New Zealand, was renowned for his all-round abilities, particularly his skill in delivering match-winning performances with both bat and ball. His towering presence on the field was complemented by a calm and strategic approach to the game, qualities that he now brings into his coaching role.
After retiring from international cricket in 2012, Oram smoothly transitioned into coaching, starting with New Zealand A in 2014. He further honed his coaching skills with the New Zealand women’s team, where he served as the bowling coach during the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2021. His experience also includes roles in franchise cricket, where he has been involved with several teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Oram’s appointment as the bowling coach is seen as a strategic move by New Zealand Cricket (NZC), especially with the team gearing up for a busy season ahead. His first major assignment will be the highly anticipated Test series against India, a formidable opponent on home soil. Oram is expected to play a key role in sharpening the skills of New Zealand’s bowling attack, particularly focusing on preparing them for the subcontinent’s challenging conditions.
Expressing his excitement about the new role, Oram said, “To be back involved with a team that means so much to me and has been a big part of my life is a real honour. There’s a fresh wave of talent coming through in the Blackcaps bowling ranks, and I hope to share my knowledge and experience to help them prepare for the challenges of international cricket.”
Oram takes over from Shane Jurgensen, who stepped down last year. With his deep understanding of the game and a proven track record in nurturing talent, Oram is expected to make a significant impact on the Blackcaps’ performance in the coming months.
As New Zealand looks to build on their recent successes, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Oram’s influence shapes the team’s performance, especially as they face the daunting task of playing in India, a venue known for its spin-friendly pitches and passionate crowds.
