Up to 13 English players were chosen in the four rounds of today’s Big Bash League draft, demonstrating the high demand for the national team. The only Asian players selected in the draft were Rishad Hossain of Bangladesh and Usama Mir of Pakistan.
Up to 13 England players were chosen in the four rounds of the Big Bash League draft on Sunday, September 1. The players were in high demand. The only Asian players selected in the draft were Rishad Hossain of Bangladesh and Usama Mir of Pakistan.
The Melbourne Renegades selected New Zealand speedster Lockie Ferguson, while Sydney Thunder selected Laurie Evans. The Adelaide Strikers selected Jamie Overton, while the Hobart Hurricanes reunited Shai Hope with Ricky Ponting. Colin Munro and Finn Allen, who were pre-signed by the Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers, were chosen.
The pre-signed player Tom Curran was chosen by the Melbourne Stars as their second round selection. Melbourne Renegades selected Jacob Bethell, an England all-rounder, who is 20 years old. In the second round, the Adelaide Strikers pre-signed Ollie Pope, the Hobart Hurricanes pre-signed Chris Jordan, and the Sydney Thunder pre-signed Sam Billings. In the round, Perth Scorchers chose to pass. Akeal Hosein, a pre-signed player, was brought in by the Sydney Sixers.
Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers, who had the first pick in the third round, both made the decision to pass. Hobart Hurricanes failed, and Adelaide Strikers signed West Indian Fabian Allen. In this round, Melbourne Renegades named their pre-signed player Tim Seifert, while Sydney Thunder selected Sherfane Rutherford. The Melbourne Stars chose Usama Mir.

Legspinner Rishad Hossain of Bangladesh was selected by the Hobart Hurricanes as their final selection. Brisbane Heat selected Tom Alsop, while Adelaide Strikers were also eliminated. Keaton Jennings was signed by the Perth Scorchers, and Sydney Sixers signed Jafer Chohan, the final draft choice.
The Perth Scorchers will host the Melbourne Stars on December 15 to kick off the 2024–25 Big Bash League. The tournament will have 44 matches, with the final scheduled for January 25, 2025.
