[Saba Sports News] The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed Brendon McCullum as the head coach for England’s white-ball teams.
The former New Zealand opener, who has been leading England’s Test team since May 2022, will now also oversee the One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals (T20Is) starting January 2025, coinciding with England’s white-ball tour of India and the ICC Champions Trophy.
This decision is part of a broader restructuring of England Men’s cricket, and McCullum’s contract has been extended until the end of 2027. In the interim, Marcus Trescothick will serve as the white-ball head coach for the upcoming series against Australia and the Caribbean tour later this year.
Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m delighted that Brendon has chosen to do both roles now with England. We are incredibly fortunate to have a coach of his quality committed to English cricket. Aligning all teams now is particularly exciting, and we look forward to taking on all challenges.”
McCullum himself is eager to take on the new responsibilities and work closely with white-ball captain Jos Buttler. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Test team, and I’m excited to extend my role to include the white-ball sides. This new challenge is something I’m ready to embrace,” he said.
He also highlighted Rob Key’s vision as a key factor in his decision, stating, “Rob Key’s vision for the future of English cricket really resonated with me. The idea of a unified coaching structure made perfect sense, and I’m energised by the prospect of guiding both teams.”
After the home Test series against Sri Lanka, McCullum will take a short break before rejoining the Test team for their tours of Pakistan in October and New Zealand in December.
