[Saba Sports News] Left-handed batter Tom Latham has been appointed as New Zealand’s full-time Test captain, taking over from Tim Southee.
The 32-year-old will lead the Black Caps in their upcoming three-Test series against India, starting on October 16. This role marks Latham’s first as a permanent skipper after previously serving as a stand-in captain for nine matches.
Following New Zealand’s 2-0 defeat to Sri Lanka under Southee, Latham expressed his excitement about stepping into the role full-time.
“It’s a special feeling to be named captain—it’s a massive honor and a privilege. In the past, I’ve been more of a caretaker, but now I can bring my own approach to the team,” he said in a video shared by New Zealand Cricket.
The India series, set to take place in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai, poses a significant challenge for Latham, especially with star batter Kane Williamson out for at least the opening Test as he recovers from a groin strain.
Mark Chapman has been added to the squad as cover. Latham remains optimistic about the team’s future, saying, “As a Test side, we’ve done a lot of good things, playing a style true to us as Kiwis. It’s a great group with experienced leaders and new talent. I’m excited for the challenge ahead.”
