[Saba Sports News] The International Cricket Council (ICC) made a highly anticipated announcement on Friday, revealing the distinguished match officials for the long-awaited ODI World Cup 2023 final. The clash of titans between host India and the formidable Australia is set to unfold on Sunday, 19th November, captivating an audience of over 1,30,000 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the world’s largest cricket stadium.
In the midst of this cricketing spectacle, the on-field umpires, Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough, both hailing from England, will command the field, closely observing the high-stakes match within the densely packed circular arena in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, Joel Wilson will don the role of the third umpire.
Former New Zealand cricketer Chris Gaffaney has been appointed as the fourth umpire for the match. Overseeing the proceedings as the match referee is the experienced former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Pycroft.
Of note, Kettleborough’s history in past knockout clashes where India faced elimination, including events like the 2014 T20 World Cup, 2015 ODI World Cup, 2016 T20 World Cup, 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 ODI World Cup, has injected an additional layer of tension for the Indian fans.
Beyond the realm of match officials, the ICC also sent the invitations to all the previous ODI World Cup-winning captains, creating an atmosphere of anticipation as cricket luminaries gather to witness the grand finale between India and Australia. In a special gesture, a distinctive blazer will be presented to all these ex-leaders.
They will unite under one roof to witness either Rohit Sharma or Pat Cummins emerge as the new World Cup-winning skipper, hoisting the coveted trophy aloft in celebration.
