One of their two 50-over assignments before the 2025 Champions Trophy, India’s ODI squad for the forthcoming series in Sri Lanka includes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
With their families, Rohit and Kohli travelled overseas following the July 4 T20 World Cup celebration in Mumbai. They are now included in the 15-man squad for the series, contrary to rumours that they will forego the Sri Lankan tour and only make a comeback in September for the start of the home season.
Hardik Pandya, who was not selected for the T20I captaincy, will play in only the T20I portion of the tour, while Jasprit Bumrah has been rested the entire time.
The ODI team includes Shreyas Iyer, who was passed over for a BCCI central contract earlier this year. One of the two starting wicketkeepers, KL Rahul, returns after a protracted injury absence. The other is Rishabh Pant, who didn’t play an ODI before getting into a car accident in December 2022.
After leading India to victory in Zimbabwe with a subpar team, Shubman Gill has been promoted to vice captain in both white-ball formats. In ODIs, Gill has also been quite effective with the bat lately; since the start of 2023, he is the second-highest run scorer globally in the format.
Seam-bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube, whose lone ODI to far came in 2019, deserves a return since Hardik isn’t playing in the ODIs. After establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with against spin for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2023 IPL, Dube’s reputation in T20 cricket has expanded significantly.
Riyan Parag was also honoured by the selectors for being chosen in both formats. His one-day promotion can be seen as a reward for his domestic form; he led Assam to their first-ever semi-final appearance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s and was the top run scorer in both the Deodhar Trophy and T20s.
Harshit Rana, a fast bowler, received his first call-up for an ODI. Rana, who participated in the 2024 Kolkata Knight Riders IPL winning team, ended up tied for second place among his team’s wicket-takers with 19 scalps in 13 matches.
Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack, and Khaleel Ahmed and Arshdeep Singh will follow. Washington Sundar is one of two spin-bowling all-rounders for Sri Lanka, along with Axar Patel, after winning Player-of-the-Series in Zimbabwe.
Notably, Ravindra Jadeja did not make the ODI squad. Like Rohit and Kohli, he is now retired from T20Is.
