[Saba Sports News] India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin broke into an illustrious list on Friday, joining the greats of the game to claim 500 Test wickets.
Ashwin achieved the landmark figure by dismissing England opener Zak Crawley in the first innings of the third Test match.
It took the tweaker only 98 matches to record this feat. This made him the second Indian cricketer and also the fastest from his country to claim this milestone. Previous, India legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who had taken 500 Test wickets in 105 matches, held the record.
Former Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is the currently the quickest among all the nine bowlers, who have bagged 500 Test wickets in their careers. The Sri Lankan did so in just 87 matches.
The 37-year-old took 25,714 deliveries in the Test format to get to 500 scalps. He is only behind the ex-Australia quick Glenn McGrath, who had done this in 25,528 balls.
