[Saba Sports News] India took on England in the 29th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 on Sunday at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.
India batted first for the first time in the ongoing tournament after losing the toss. The first innings did not pan out as they would have liked. They lost early wickets and also had an all-out scare looming large at the end of the innings.
Amidst the crisis, India captain Rohit Sharma stood tall. On a sluggish pitch at Lucknow, Rohit scored a 101-ball 87 to revive India from the initial collapse and also helped them post a competitive total of 229 runs.
In the process, the 36-year-old, became only the second batter to hit the 1000-run mark in the ODI format in 2023.
His opening partner Shubman Gill accomplished this feat earlier in the ongoing World Cup.
Virat Kohli could also bring up this milestone soon as he needs just 34 more runs away to sit alongside Rohit and Shubman.
Moreover, Rohit also left Sachin Tendulkar behind in the list of most runs scored for India in the World Cups, including the T20 one. So far, the current India skipper has gathered 2,339 runs in the World Cups.
Virat Kohli occupy the top place here, having scored 2,525 runs in 59 matches. Tendulkar, who was second in this list, up until October 28, had accumulated 2,278 runs in 45 World Cup games in his career.
Rohit also won his 100th match as India captain. England had to chase 230 runs to win but the Indian bowlers bundled them out for 129 as the Men in Blue kept their winning streak intact and moved up to the topmost position on the points table.
