As the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia approaches, former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist has weighed in with his prediction for the outcome of the five-Test series.
With the series set to kick off in November 2024, Gilchrist believes that the onus is on Australia to reassert their dominance at home, especially after failing to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the last decade.
In an interview, Gilchrist emphasised the challenge that lies ahead for Australia, stating, “The onus is on Australia to prove they are the dominant force at home. India knows how to win overseas, and they’ll be a tough side to beat”.
Despite the stiff competition from a strong Indian side led by Rohit Sharma, Gilchrist backed Australia to come out on top, although he acknowledged that it would be a closely fought series. “I’m going to go with Australia, and hopefully, they will defeat India. But it will be a close battle,” he remarked.
The series is crucial for both teams, as it will be their final Test engagement before the 2025 World Test Championship Final. Australia, having recently defeated India in the 2023 WTC Final, will be eager to carry that momentum forward. However, India, with back-to-back series wins in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21, will be confident of continuing their dominance Down Under.
Adding to the excitement, Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has expressed his determination to reclaim the trophy, referring to it as “unfinished business” and highlighting his team’s hunger to win. As the countdown to the series begins, fans can expect an intense and evenly matched contest between two of the world’s best cricket teams.
