[Saba Sports News] Ravichandran Ashwin made cricket history by becoming the second Indian to collect 500 Test wickets, a milestone he reached by dismissing Zak Crawley in the third Test against England in Rajkot.
He’s now among the rare group of off-spinners, including Nathan Lyon and Muttiah Muralidaran, to achieve this feat, and did so as the second fastest in terms of matches and deliveries. Despite playing fewer matches, Ashwin trails Lyon, the only bowler with more wickets since Ashwin’s debut in 2011, by a narrow margin.
Ashwin’s exceptional home record is a standout, nearing the achievement of 350 wickets in India. He credits his father for his success, highlighting the emotional and supportive role he played throughout his career.
“I would like to dedicate this to my father, he’s responsible for everything I’ve done in my life. He’s lived it through and had heart attacks every time I’ve played. I think his health has gone for a toss because he’s watched games of mine on TV and been a constant support for me,” said Ashwin after the end of the day’s play. “I’m sure he will be very happy today. But yeah, 500 wickets done and dusted now, and we’ve got a game hanging in the balance.”
After a challenging period marked by injuries and doubt between 2018 and 2019, Ashwin described this time as a significant low, leading to a loss of love for the game. However, the COVID-19 pandemic offered him a chance for reflection, helping him rediscover his passion and purpose in cricket, ultimately leading to this historic achievement.
