[Saba Sports News] With not many matches left for the T20 World Cup 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is wasting no time to chalk out the strategies for the tournament, scheduled in the West Indies and the USA in June next year.
As reported, the BCCI wants Rohit Sharma to captain the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup as well, considering the uncertainty on Hardik Pandya’s injury.
While Rohit’s T20I future is looking clear, there is another senior batter by the name of Virat Kohli, who is also vying for a spot in the squad.
Despite being the top-scorer for India in the ODI World Cup 2023 and an overall highest run-getter in T20Is, Kohli’s place in the shortest-format is not a guaranteed anymore.
The BCCI, selectors and head coach Rahul Dravid recently had a five-hour-long meeting in which they also discussed the road ahead for Kohli in T20Is.
Dainik Jagran has reported that the team management is looking at Ishan Kishan as a potential successor to Kohli as they want an aggressive number three batter, who can start attacking right from the word go.
However, things could change, depending upon how Kohli performs in the Indian Premier League 2024, which is scheduled just before the T20 World Cup.
The BCCI is likely to have a meeting with Kohli on this in the coming days.
Notably, both Kohli and Rohit last played a T20I in 2022 when India lost the semi-final of the previous T20 World Cup by 10 wickets to England. The duo has also been given a break for the upcoming T20I series scheduled against South Africa.
