[Saba Sports News] The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retire MS Dhoni’s jersey No.7 to pay homage to the legendary cricketer.
“The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick M S Dhoni’s Number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can’t get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers,” a BCCI official said as quoted by The Indian Express.
Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 after playing his last match for India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final versus New Zealand. He still plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he captains Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Dhoni, known for his captaincy achievements and middle-order batting, led India to three ICC trophies in the form of T20 World Cup 2007, ODI World Cup 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013, becoming the most successful Indian skipper.
The BCCI retiring Dhoni’s jersey means no Indian player will have the option to select the playing kit with No.7.
The Indian board has given the same status to batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, whose iconic No.10 jersey was retired in 2017.
