All-around player Paul Walter, who was instrumental in the Brisbane Heat’s BBL title victory the previous year, has been officially announced as one of the newest group of nominees for the draft that will take place next month. Walter may be headed back to the league.
Hard-hitting batter and left-arm seamer Walter developed into a cult figure for the Heat when he took 17 wickets and, each time, celebrated with a signature aircraft. Walter was also included in the team of the tournament that the eight head coaches chose.
In the event that another team tries to select Walter and the Heat wish to bring him back, they hold the retention rights. One important consideration is that he is available for the entire season, including the playoffs, and he would appear to be a solid addition to their diverse attack, which already features spin twins Mitchell Swepson and Matt Kuhnemann in addition to Michael Neser, Xavier Bartlett, and Spencer Johnson.
“I think we’ve got the best bowling unit in the competition,” he told during last season’s campaign. “I feel like I complement the rest of the attack quite well and we’ve been good at managing games. Kuhny and Sweppo have bowled so well through the middle that teams have come hard at me, which is probably what you want with my style of bowling.
“I’ve worked a lot on my defensive bowling, trying to figure out how to get batters off strike and trying to keep the ball away from the shorter pockets. I normally bowl the overs where the right-handers are hitting to the short leg side, so I’ve had to get quite clever with getting them to hit to the other side of the ground. I do a lot of work off the field figuring out what I’m going to do in different situations.”
The majority of the names listed on Friday were English cricket players, even though most of them are only available for six to nine games. After the Test series in New Zealand concludes three days after the start of the BBL, England will go on a limited-overs tour of India beginning on January 22 of the following year. Many of the players also have contract with ILT20 or SA20.
Nonetheless, a few, like Olly Stone, Dan Lawrence, Jordan Cox, and Joe Clarke, are probably going to draw attention. Legspinner Rehan Ahmed, who was chosen to tour the West Indies after being originally draughted by the Sydney Sixers in the previous season, has once again been nominated.
