Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey amassed 90 runs to lead
South Australia to a 205-run advantage against Queensland in their Sheffield
Shield match.
Following a wild first day at the Adelaide Oval in which 17 wickets fell, the
Redbacks managed to put an end to the mayhem and push ahead of the Bulls on
Saturday.
Despite losing six wickets in the last session, South Australia may have won
the match thanks to Carey and captain Jake Lehmann’s 119-run partnership.
To keep Queensland in the game, Carey was dismissed 10
runs short of his sixth first-class century after scooping into Jimmy Peirson’s
hands. They ended up losing 5 for 18.
After South Australia was dismissed for 232 in their second innings,
Queensland, who was at the bottom of the table, had 206 to chase.
Ahead of Australia’s impending Test trip of New Zealand, Carey’s fifty-six-ball
knock off came just in time. He had previously hit 49 of South Australia’s 132
in their opening innings.
After the controversial stumping of Jonny Bairstow
during the 2018 Ashes, the 32-year-old has not played at his peak level with
the bat. Australia will be hoping that Carey regains his form against the Black
Caps.
Seven minutes before stumps were scheduled to be called, the Redbacks’ second
innings came to a close, with Nathan McAndrew smashing an unbeaten twenty-four
to take the advantage over 200.
Michael Neser, an all-round bowler for Queensland who has been called up to the
Australian Test team for the New Zealand trip, finished the game with five
wickets at a cost of three for fifty-one.
Young opener Jake Fraser-McGurk of South Australia,
who has been tipped by some like Ricky Ponting as a future Test player, was out
for 1 in the first innings after being removed for a fourth-ball duck.
on have a chance of winning their second game of the season, Queensland will be
looking on huge hits from Australian batsman Matt Renshaw and Bulls skipper
Marnus Labuschange. This is Labuschange’s debut Shield encounter.
