[Saba Sports News] Donovan Mitchell could potentially sign a lucrative contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer, though his decision has been uncertain. However, recent remarks from owner Dan Gilbert may offer Cavaliers fans some hope.
Gilbert expressed confidence that Mitchell will ultimately choose to re-sign with the team. He mentioned that there have been preliminary discussions between the two parties regarding a potential extension.
“We’ve been talking to him, sure, for the last couple of years about extending this contract,” Gilbert told Larry Lage of The Associated Press. “We think he will extend. I think if you listen to him talk, he loves the city.”
Gilbert emphasized the positive environment in Cleveland, particularly highlighting the team’s young core, with Mitchell being a significant component.
While Mitchell is currently under contract until the 2024-25 season, he is eligible to sign a four-year deal worth approximately $200 million during the offseason. Despite previous trade rumors surrounding Mitchell, the Cavaliers aim to put those uncertainties to rest.
Mitchell has been a standout performer for the Cavaliers this season, averaging 27.4 points per game, with the team boasting a 44-29 record.
