[Saba Sports News] Veteran guard Ricky Rubio’s time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and possibly his professional basketball career, seems to be nearing an end after playing less than 70 games for the team.
Shams Charania and Joe Vardon from The Athletic reported that the Cavaliers are considering a separation from Rubio, amidst growing skepticism about his return to the NBA. Rubio, who is 33, has not been expected to play this season due to mental health reasons, having announced a leave of absence over the summer.
With a professional career that started at age 14 in Spain and includes 12 NBA seasons, Rubio has an impressive record of 10.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. However, the Cavaliers, currently standing at 15-12, are in need of immediate support, especially with injuries to guard Darius Garland and forward Evan Mobley.
Rubio’s contract with the Cavaliers, worth $6.1 million this season and a partially guaranteed $4.25 million for the next, positions him as a potential buyout candidate. This development comes after his 2021 move to Cleveland and could indicate the approaching conclusion of Rubio’s basketball journey.
