[Saba Sports News] The Washington Wizards were on the brink of relocating to Virginia, but recent developments indicate that they will remain in Washington D.C., as per the mandate of the city’s attorney general.
According to D.C. reporter Ben Dennis, the attorney general informed Monumental Sports on Monday that the Washington Capitals and Wizards cannot move from D.C. until 2047, citing a 2007 bond/lease agreement. This decision stands even if Monumental were to pay off the bond debt early.
Despite Monumental’s desire to pay off the bonds and exit the lease at Capital One Arena, there are ongoing disputes over ownership of the Wizards, with both sides vying for control of the franchise.
Rumors of a move to Virginia emerged last year when team owner Ted Leonisis unveiled plans for a new arena complex and entertainment district. However, the potential relocation garnered mixed reactions from fans, many of whom preferred the Wizards to remain in D.C.
Now, with the Wizards set to stay, local fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Bradley Beal, in particular, expressed his opposition to the team leaving the nation’s capital.
While the news of remaining in D.C. offers stability, it doesn’t address the team’s struggles on the court. Regardless of their location, the Wizards’ priority should be improving their performance to better compete in the league.
