[Saba Sports News] Australian cricket star David Warner announced his retirement from T20 internationals, effective after the T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the West Indies and USA starting June 1. This decision comes after Warner had previously declared his retirement from Tests and ODIs earlier in the year.
His announcement followed a standout performance in the third T20I against West Indies in Perth, where despite his impressive 81 off 49 balls, Australia couldn’t secure a win against a 221-run target. Warner, at 37, ended the series as the top run-scorer with 173 runs across three innings, earning him the Player of the Series accolade.
In his post-series reflections, Warner expressed satisfaction with his career and readiness to make way for emerging talent post-World Cup. He highlighted his plans leading up to the World Cup, including participating in the IPL and taking some time off after the New Zealand series.
“It was good to have a break and play the franchise stuff. I’ve got a lot of time off after the New Zealand series, go to the IPL before we embark on a World Cup in the Caribbean. Was quite surprised an opening bowler 145kph and swings it not trying to get me out. Go the Caribbean, the boundaries aren’t too big there. I’m well and truly done, it’s time for the youngsters to come through and show their talent,” said Warner.
Warner’s T20I career has been illustrious, currently standing as Australia’s second-highest run-scorer in the format with 3,067 runs from 102 innings, including one century and 26 fifties. He is on the verge of surpassing Aaron Finch as Australia’s leading T20I run-scorer. Noteworthy is his Player of the Tournament award in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where he was the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer.
Looking forward, Warner is set to participate in a three-match T20I series against New Zealand, marking Australia’s final engagement before the T20 World Cup 2024.
