[Saba Sports News] Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2024, with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking over. CSK had a disappointing season, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
However, Dhoni’s fans still flocked to stadiums to see their star player. As speculation about his availability for the next season grows, Dhoni has shared his thoughts on the situation.
CSK has had a strong auction strategy, balancing the retention of star players with the Right to Match (RTM) option. With a four-player retention cap, the team faces tough decisions.
Dhoni is advocating for a change in the retention rule to allow him to continue playing without disrupting the team’s balance.
“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention, etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. Once the rules and regulations get formalized, I will take a call that is in the best interest of the team,” said Dhoni at an event in Hyderabad.
On July 31, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council met with franchise owners to discuss the upcoming Mega Auctions. All 10 franchises agreed on a minimum six-player retention cap and more flexibility with RTM to preserve team continuity.
The Impact Player Rule, which faced backlash last season, was also a topic of discussion.
