The Ranji Trophy is still India’s top First Class
cricket competition, providing a stage for aspiring players to show off their
skills and make an impression on the senior national squad. Manoj Tiwary, a
former cricket player for India, has pointed out a number of issues with the
Ranji Trophy’s organisation and isn’t totally satisfied with it either. In a
furious tirade on social media, Tiwary demanded that the competition be dropped
from the upcoming season. On social media, the Bengal star didn’t clarify the
precise rationale behind the suggestion, though.
“Ranji trophy should be scrapped from the
calendar from the next season onwards. So many things going wrong in the
tournament. So many things need to be looked into in order to save this
prestigious tournament which has a rich history. It’s losing its charm and
importance. Absolutely frustrated,” Tiwary wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Additionally, Tiwary used Facebook Live to draw
attention to specific problems with the Ranji Trophy. He also announced that he
would retire from the Ranji Trophy at the end of this season during the live
session.
First, the Bengali cricket player criticised the
inadequate changing rooms at the St Xavier’s College Ground in Thumba,
Thiruvananthapuram, when Bengal was playing Kerala in an Elite Group B match.
During the live session, he said: “We are playing
Kerala in a ground, not a stadium despite there being one built years ago, we
are being asked to play in a ground on the outskirts of the State. The dressing
rooms are such that you cannot even strategise properly since our dressing room
and the opposite dressing room are so close to each other that you can hear
what the others are saying. There is no privacy. I hope that this is looked
into in the future.”
However, he hasn’t yet revealed the real reason behind
the tweet to do away with the Ranji Trophy. He promised to reveal the reason
after ending his career.
“I cannot elaborate further as I am a player and
the captain of a State and I have to follow the BCCI’s Code of Conduct. I
cannot say anything publicly during the match,” he said.
