[Saba Sports News] The third ODI between India and Sri Lanka on August 7 saw Riyan Parag make his format debut. Skipper Rohit Sharma announced the Assam all-rounder’s inclusion in the playing XI at the toss at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Parag made his international debut in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe last month. After being sidelined for the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka, the right-handed batter was handed his ODI debut.
Virat Kohli presented Parag with his maiden ODI cap ahead of the match. Following Rohit’s announcement, the BCCI posted a heartwarming video where the 22-year-old delivered an emotional dressing room speech upon learning of his ODI debut.
“Coming from Assam, it was termed impossible for a kid to play here with players like you. My dad, mom, and I made it our mission to reach this point. It happened in the T20s, and now, being here with Rohit bhai and Virat bhaiya, feels surreal,” Parag said in the video.
“I called my parents to share the news, and it was an emotional moment for all of us. It feels amazing to be here with you guys. Thank you so much,” added the Rajasthan Royals cricketer.
The third and final ODI is crucial as Sri Lanka leads the series 1-0, with a chance to secure their first bilateral ODI series win against India in 27 years.
