[Saba Sports News] India batter Shreyas Iyer snapped at a journalist after the latter asked the player about his alleged weakness against the short-pitch deliveries.
As the report asked Iyer about his preparations for tackling the South African players, who are destroying every other opposition with short balls, the 28-year-old did not take too kindly to this query, brushing aside his apparent weakness.
“When you say it’s a problem for me, what do you mean? Have you seen how many pull shots I’ve scored, specially which has gone for four?” Iyer said at the post-match presser after India’s game versus Sri Lanka
“You know if you try to hit a ball, you’re bound to get out anyway whether it’s a short ball or overpitched. If I get bowled two or three times, you all would say he can’t play an inswinging ball, he can’t play if the ball is seaming. You guys have created that mahol [feeling] outside that he can’t play a short ball, and I feel that people are picking that up every now and then and it plays on your mind regularly and you keep working on that,” he added.
Iyer was not having a very good World Cup personally up until Thursday. He was at his hitting best in the match against Sri Lanka, scoring a 56-ball 82 to take India’s total to 357/8 in 50 overs.
In the second innings, the Indian pacers wreaked havoc on the Sri Lankan, blowing them away at a paltry score of 55.
India gathered a 302-run victory to keep their undefeated run in the tournament intact. They have become the first team to qualify for the World Cup 2023 semis and will next face South Africa on November 5 in Kolkata.
