[Saba Sport News] The Los Angeles Lakers seem to value Austin Reaves highly. According to Jovan Buha from The Athletic, the Lakers are reluctant to trade Reaves in a deal for Chicago Bulls’ All-Star Zach LaVine. Buha suggests that a more probable trade scenario for LaVine might include D’Angelo Russell, either Rui Hachimura or Gabe Vincent for salary balance, and a first-round pick in 2029 or 2030, potentially with certain protections.
Lately, the Lakers have been linked to LaVine, a client of Klutch Sports and a former UCLA student, who seems to be nearing a departure from the Bulls. Reaves, who recently extended his contract with the Lakers for four years at $50 million, is experiencing some early-season struggles. Despite a solid 14-5-5 average, his efficiency has dropped to a career-low 44.3% shooting, and he’s averaging a high of 2.6 turnovers per game. The league seems to be adapting to Reaves’ playing style, leading to his recent benching in favor of Cam Reddish.
However, arguments for retaining Reaves are strong. He’s a versatile defender, penetrates well, and scores effectively at various levels, making him an excellent supporting player. As a homegrown talent in a team mostly comprising external acquisitions, Reaves shares a great rapport with LeBron James, adding value to his presence in the team.
The challenge for the Lakers lies in creating an appealing trade package for LaVine without including Reaves. Russell’s inconsistent performance, Hachimura and Vincent’s roles as bench players, and the uncertain value of a future protected first-round pick make the deal less attractive. With LaVine’s status as a multiple-time All-Star and a top scorer, other teams might offer more compelling deals.
Consequently, the Lakers might need to significantly improve their offer to avoid the Bulls’ disinterest.
