[Saba Sports News] Ian Chappell believes Joe Root should abandon the “Bazball” approach to regain his form in the ongoing Test series between India and England. Despite a strong track record, Root’s performance has dipped, with only 77 runs across six innings at an average of 12.83, often getting out to unconventional shots.
Chappell questions why Root would alter his successful natural game, emphasizing that Root was a fast scorer even before the advent of “Bazball,” a strategy encouraged by England’s head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes.
“Root had a bloody fine record playing normally, and he was a quick scorer playing normally. I don’t see why he’s trying to change things drastically, and I’ve never believed you should play premeditated shots,” Chappell shard.
Root, whose performance has flourished under McCullum, averaging over 50, has yet to find his rhythm in India. With England trailing 1-2 in the series, there’s hope for Root to make a significant comeback.
Chappell argues that aggressive play should be tailored to the conditions and the bowlers, criticizing the high-risk approach after England’s batting collapse in Rajkot. He stresses the importance of adapting to the bowler and conditions rather than premeditated aggression, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to scoring runs.
“It’s got to be according to the conditions and also who’s bowling,” Chappell views playing aggressive cricket. “You can’t always do it – it’s got to be according to the conditions and also who’s bowling. Some bowlers, you can score off a lot quicker than others, but when a really good bowler is bowling a good spell, you’ve got to be prepared to try and battle it out and think to yourself, ‘Well, when he goes off, it’ll get a bit easier’. You’re always trying to score runs – that’s got to be your prime aim. But, you’ve also got to realize some conditions, against some bowlers, you can score quicker than others,” he added.
