[Saba Sports News] Team India outclassed South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados, lifting their second ICC title on Saturday, June 29, and ending an 11-year title drought.
In a wave of emotions, star batter Virat Kohli announced his retirement from T20I cricket. Shortly after, captain Rohit Sharma also bid farewell to the format in which he began his international career.
Notably, Sharma was part of the squad that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. During the post-match press conference, Rohit confirmed his retirement from T20Is but stated he would continue in ODIs and Tests.
“This was my last [T20I] game as well. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted, I wanted to win the cup,” he said.
“It was a very emotional moment for me. I was very desperate for this title in my life. Happy that we eventually crossed the line,” Rohit added.
Earlier, during the presentation ceremony, Virat Kohli, the player of the match, announced his retirement, stating it was time for the younger generation to take over.
Rohit Sharma ends his T20I career as the highest run-scorer with 4,231 runs in 159 games. He also holds the record for the most centuries in T20Is (five) and achieved his 50th win as captain in his final match, ending on a high note.
