[Saba Sports News] At the outset of the tournament, there was widespread belief among cricket experts and fans that Mohammed Shami should have been a part of the Indian playing XI. Nonetheless, the Indian team management initially opted for Shardul Thakur. It wasn’t until the fifth match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 that Shami finally received his opportunity to represent Team India.
In the contest against New Zealand, Shami showcased his immense value by securing an impressive five-wicket haul in his ten-over spell. Consequently, his exceptional performance played a pivotal role in India limiting the Kiwis to a total below 300.
Following this remarkable display, former pace bowler Irfan Pathan likened Shami to a ‘Ferrari,’ emphasizing that Shami consistently delivers speed and excitement whenever he takes the field. On his ‘X’ handle, Irfan Pathan shared, “Mohammed Shami is akin to a Ferrari. Every time you take it out of the garage, it provides the same thrill, speed, and joy.”
Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul contributed significantly to India’s victory over New Zealand, propelling them to the top of the tournament standings. Shami’s remarkable performance also led to several records being broken.
He became the first Indian player to achieve two five-wicket hauls in the history of the ODI World Cup. Moreover, he surpassed the legendary spinner Anil Kumble, becoming India’s second-highest wicket-taker in World Cup history. Shami made his World Cup debut in 2015 and currently boasts 36 wickets in the tournament, with his best figures being 5/54.
In the match against New Zealand, India opted to field first and made a promising start, reducing the Kiwis to 19/2 during the powerplay. However, a resilient partnership of 159 runs between Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra allowed New Zealand to stage a comeback.
Nevertheless, India fought back in the later stages of the game, ultimately dismissing the Kiwis for a total of 273 runs in 50 overs. Shami emerged as the standout bowler for India, claiming five wickets for 54 runs.
Kuldeep Yadav also contributed effectively, securing 2/73, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj each chipped in with a wicket.
