[Saba Sports News] In a major blow to the Manchester Originals in The Hundred Men’s Competition 2024, England’s white-ball skipper Jos Buttler has been ruled out due to a calf injury. This setback comes as the Originals face a challenging start, having lost their first three matches.
Buttler, 33, was set to captain the side, but his absence raised concerns about his availability. This marks the second consecutive year he’s missed a significant part of The Hundred due to calf issues. His injury comes at a critical time for the Originals, who have yet to secure a win.
Buttler’s leadership and batting prowess were crucial for the team’s success, especially after their close finish in last year’s final against the Oval Invincibles. His withdrawal affects the team’s performance and deprives the tournament of one of its marquee players. This is particularly unfortunate for The Hundred, as the ECB plans to sell stakes in the teams this autumn, attracting potential investors. The absence of high-profile players like Buttler could impact the competition’s marketability.
Despite this setback, Buttler’s position as England’s white-ball captain remains secure. He will lead the national team in their upcoming series against Australia, featuring three T20s and five ODIs from September 11-29. This series will see Marcus Trescothick as interim head coach following Matthew Mott’s departure.
The Manchester Originals will face the Northern Superchargers on August 4 at Headingley in Leeds.
