[Saba Sports News] Following New Zealand’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, former skipper Kane Williamson turned down a new central contract offered by New Zealand Cricket, sparking widespread debate about his priorities. Some criticized him for allegedly choosing personal financial gain over national interests. However, Williamson recently clarified his stance, which resonated throughout the cricketing community.
Upon arriving in Auckland, Williamson expressed his strong desire to continue playing for the BlackCaps as long as he is physically and mentally capable. The 33-year-old emphasized his deep affection for captaining the team (206 games across all formats) and representing New Zealand, describing it as a privilege and honor. He stated that any role within the team would be fulfilling, and he wished to remain part of New Zealand cricket for as long as he could contribute effectively.
“My priority still is absolutely playing for New Zealand. I want to play as long as I can, I love playing for New Zealand. I’ve really enjoyed my time captaining and it’s been a privilege and an honor to do that for a number of years. Being a part of this team is so dear to me and I want to remain in that community for as long as I can, as long as I’m offering and adding value,” stated Williamson.
Following in the footsteps of speedster Trent Boult, who opted out of his national contract to pursue franchise cricket opportunities but still represented New Zealand in major tournaments, Williamson plans to prioritize his national team commitments. He aims to participate in most fixtures, except for next January, when he will join the SA20’s third season. Williamson expressed enthusiasm for this opportunity, considering South Africa an excellent venue for cricket.
“It (SA20) looks like an amazing competition. There’s a number of great competitions on during that time but that one looks really exciting. It’s a wonderful place to go and play. It’s something a little bit different,” added Williamson.
