[Saba Sports News] The Madras High Court recently sentenced IPS officer Sampath Kumar to 15 days in jail for making serious allegations against Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal. Dhoni, known for not taking such claims lightly, promptly filed a petition against Kumar’s statements. The court ruled in Dhoni’s favor, issuing the jail sentence to Kumar, but with a twist – the sentence has been suspended for 30 days, giving Kumar time to appeal.
Dhoni had previously taken legal action against a major Indian news channel for comments linking him to the scandal, which involved three Rajasthan Royals players – S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandela, and Ankeet Chavan – and led to their arrests and lifetime bans by the BCCI. The Supreme Court found them guilty but left the ban duration decision to the BCCI.
Additionally, the scandal implicated owners of the Royals and Gurunath Meiyappan, related to CSK’s co-owner and a former BCCI chief, in illegal betting, resulting in a two-year suspension for both franchises from the IPL.
With the latest legal development, attention now turns to the ongoing case and Dhoni’s anticipated return to lead CSK in the upcoming season.
